Tabilo's Triumph Continues: Masters 1000 Breakthrough in Rome
Chilean tennis sensation Alejandro Tabilo extends his dream run, securing his spot in the semifinals at Rome. After stunning Novak Djokovic last Sunday and defeating Karen Khachanov in the round of 16 on Tuesday, Tabilo sailed into his first-ever Masters 1000 semifinal with a straight-sets victory (6-3, 6-4) over Zhizhen Zhang on Wednesday.
Tabilo's fairy tale week persists as he sets foot into uncharted territory in the Masters 1000 circuit in Rome. Following his monumental upset against world number one Novak Djokovic and a convincing win over Karen Khachanov, the Chilean sensation secured his place in the semifinals after dispatching Zhizhen Zhang in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) in just 1 hour and 26 minutes. He now awaits the winner of the Zverev-Fritz clash in the semifinals.
Prior to this remarkable feat at the Italian Open, Tabilo had never advanced beyond the round of 16 in a Masters 1000 event and had only reached the second round in Grand Slam tournaments. Nonetheless, despite his limited experience at the highest level, Tabilo continues to shine in the 2024 season, highlighted by his maiden title triumph in Auckland in January and a runner-up finish in Santiago in February.
Currently ranked 32nd in the world at the age of 26, Tabilo delivered a commanding performance on Wednesday, securing a crucial break in the first set to lead 4-2 before sealing the set moments later. Displaying even greater resilience in the second set, he didn't concede a single break point and showcased remarkable shot-making with 20 winners to just 3 unforced errors.
From being outside the top 100 just a year ago, Tabilo is now poised to break into the top 30 for the first time in his career, earning a coveted seeding at Roland-Garros, where he will celebrate his 27th birthday on June 2nd. Riding high on this wave of success, he aims to make his mark by reaching the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.
