Manchester City edges closer to the championship title. Dominating Tottenham with a 2-0 victory in a rescheduled match of the 34th round of the Premier League, the Cityzens reclaimed the league's top spot from Arsenal (86 points), now trailing by 2 points, relegating the Gunners to the second position. Erling Haaland (51st, 90th) sealed the deal with a brace in the second half.
With a full squad for this potentially pivotal match in the English title race, including the return of Nathan Aké and Jack Grealish, Manchester City initially seemed overwhelmed by the stakes at the unusually quiet Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday evening. Hindered by technical errors and contained by Spurs' intense pressing, Pep Guardiola's men had to wait until after halftime to find their rhythm.
HAALAND TAKES THE SPOTLIGHT
After coming close to breaking the deadlock early in the second half through Kevin De Bruyne (46th), the Cityzens eventually breached Tottenham's defense, courtesy of Erling Haaland (51st, 0-1), the Norwegian cyborg finishing off a splendid team move by Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne. Despite leading, the Manchester machine failed to regain its usual fluidity against a resilient Spurs side determined not to make things easy.
Substituted in the second half to inject life into a somewhat passive London attack, Dejan Kulusevski (70th, 80th) nearly equalized for Tottenham twice. However, Stefan Ortega stood tall in the City goal, denying Tottenham's attempts, including a close-range strike by Heung-Min Son (85th). Tottenham missed their chance, while City capitalized. A lightning-fast run by substitute Jérémy Doku set up a penalty, converted by the evening's hero Erling Haaland (90th, 0-2). Haaland's twenty-sixth goal may well spell title glory for City, who now lead Arsenal by two points.
